I kind of suspect the timing of the rejection and the cage cleaning were coincidental rather than causal. I think something was wrong with the baby already. It is possible it was more noticeable once the den was cleaned and the fleas gone and that is why it happened then.

I think it's normal for some mother animals to attack their young. My dog gave birth a couple months ago and when I left to go feed them all I found were dead bodies of puppies and the Mother dog eating 1one...

I would also add that separate the father coz hes the fucked up villain in the storym the mother is over protective because of the father. Male rodents, marsupials, apes(mammals) tends to be jealous/threatened by the presence of the juvenile. So in time, he would try to snatch and kill it

The reason why we cant just touch a laying nest. The scent of the nest and the babies cannot be of other scent rather than the anmiotic fluid/urine of the mother. Bad move.

Don't know how I ended up here! Mistake was not the cleaning of the box but putting animal fur.. it has strong oily odour which mother didn't like. Had it been kept in Sun for longer time then she might would have accepted it!. Nature has its own way to flourish we have no right to decide for them. I have rescued many birds and animals. It's better to let them live the way THEY want instead of deciding for them. One should give only a little help if found them on grav danger. You had good intentions and luckily the baby survived. You wouldn't have forgiven yourself if he would have died.
